About Endoscopic Spine Surgery

Endoscopic spine surgery is a minimally invasive alternative to spinal surgery. Compared to traditional spine surgery, endoscopic spine procedure only requires a small incision where a narrow, metal tube will be inserted. Using this tube minimizes the damage to the muscles and the tissues.

A special camera called an endoscope will be inserted through the tube. It sends high-definition images to the doctors, allowing them to view the spine and its surrounding tissues and perform the surgery.

Conditions that can be treated by endoscopic spine surgery

The following spine conditions can be treated using the endoscopic spine procedure:

– Facet-related pain
– Degenerative disc disease
– Herniated discs
– Spinal deformities, tumors, and infections
– Stenosis

Treating facet-related pain with endoscopic spine surgery

The facet joints in the lower back attributes to as much as 40 percent of the causes of lower back pain. Traditionally, doctors treat it by using X-rays and a heated probe to ablate the medial branch nerve. While it does the job, doctors can’t really see the treatment area (hence, it’s considered a “blind” surgery).

With endoscopic spine surgery, doctors can now see the area to be treated and do the job with more accuracy and precision. This provides a more lasting result compared to the conventional “blind” procedure.

Treating damaged discs with endoscopic spine surgery

Our doctors at Ozark Orthopaedics can treat damaged discs with this endoscopic procedure. An endoscope is used to view the damaged area and guide the doctors in removing the small fragments that are causing pain. A heated probe or laser is then used to seal the torn disc and remove any loose tissue.

You may have to wear a brace for several weeks after the procedure but you may resume your regular day-to-day activities within two weeks.
