Many of us think of physical therapy as something that only athletes and post-surgical clients can benefit from. This is definitely not true as physical therapy can benefit us in a multitude of ways, including:

    Pain management
    One of the key benefits of physical therapy is pain management.

    There are therapeutic exercises taught in physical therapy that can help mobilize the joints and soft tissues, which help in restoring muscle function and in the long run, reduce or eliminate pain.

    Prevention of injuries
    There’s a good reason why physical therapy is a vital component of an athlete’s life.

    Physical therapy can assess one’s weak points and address them. A physical therapist can create a customized exercise regimen for a client, targeting and strengthening weak muscle groups and joints to prevent potential injuries.

    Mobility and balance improvement or restoration
    An injury or surgery can leave a patient with balance or movement issues. Physical therapy can help with that.

    There are therapeutic exercises and techniques that can help improve or restore one’s balance and movement – whether it involves fine (e.g. writing and eating) or gross (e.g. walking) motor movements.

    Physical health improvement
    Physical therapy can help in some of the age-related health issues such as arthritis and osteoporosis. It’s a more conservative approach, especially for older people. It’s less traumatic compared to going under the knife, in cases when surgery is just an option.

    Weight management
    If you have weight-related conditions such as diabetes, it’s very important to lose excess weight and have a change in lifestyle. A physical therapist can create an individual management plan, usually comprising of the right mix of cardio and strength training exercises.
