Every year, October is recognized as National Physical Therapy Month. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of physical therapy. This year, with the #ChoosePT campaign, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging health care providers to reduce the use of opioids in favor of safe alternatives like physical therapy for chronic pain management and healing post injury or operation.
What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy is the treatment of a disease or injury by use of physical methods such as stretching, massage, exercise therapy, and mechanical movement of the body to promote healing, correct impairments and improve mobility and function.
Physical therapy is particularly important in the world of orthopaedics. A physical therapist often serves as your guide through orthopaedic recovery. Much of the treatment used during PT is targeted at re-balancing your musculoskeletal system to better perform functions that matter to you after experiencing an injury or undergoing orthopaedic surgery.
