Neck Pain

Our cervical spine, which consists of seven bones (C1-C7) in the neck, allow us to hold up our heads and move them with ease. So any changes in any of these bones, no matter how small it is, can cause neck pain and restrict mobility. Find out what could be causing your neck pain and how Ozark Orthopaedics Spine Center can help you.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain can happen for a variety of reasons. This includes:

Muscle strains
Neck muscle strain can be a result of overuse such as spending so many hours hunched over your computer or your phone.

Natural wear and tear
Like any other joints in the body, your neck joints can also wear down over time. This is true for conditions like osteoarthritis where the cartilage between your bones deteriorates.

Pinched nerve
A herniated disk or bone spurs in your neck can compress the nerves branching out from your spinal cord.

Injuries
Collisions that end in a whiplash injury, that is, when the head is jerked backward and then forward, can strain the soft tissues of the neck.

Treating Neck Pain

Treatment for neck pain will depend largely on its underlying cause and severity of the discomfort.

Most common types of mild to moderate neck pain usually responds well to self-care within two to three weeks. If there’s little relief from it, your doctor may recommend other forms of treatment, such as:

Medications
This may include stronger pain medicines, muscle relaxants, or tricyclic antidepressants.

Therapy
There are different forms of therapies that can provide pain relief. This includes physical therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), the use of traction, and short-term immobilization.

Surgery
The type of surgery needed for neck pain depends on its underlying cause. If the pain is a result of a damaged disc, a procedure like decompressive laminectomy may help. However, if the damaged disc cannot be salvaged, the doctor may recommend a disc replacement procedure.
